An embarrassment of riches amid tragedy

Because I have to read and listen to so much news for work, I often enter self-imposed news bans over weekends. We had a long weekend over Christmas, so, in my news-ban-mindset, I didn’t know about the horrible earthquake and resultant tsunamis in Asia and Africa until I started my truck this morning. What a mind-boggling tragedy. I’m trying to decide who should get how big of a check, and wondering what else I can do. The little tropical public health clock in my head is counting down to the moment when it all gets worse and water-borne diseases start running rampant.

In my little bubble world, I finished knitting and felting my Constant Companion, which ended up being much larger than I expected, but that’s a bonus. I may need to make some more cord for the straps and possibly a few more pockets, since I have the space for them. I need to embroider the front pocket and sew on the button. But the bag itself looks great and was easy to block once I found the correct empty boxes. It only smells a tiny bit sheepy when wet, which is another bonus.

The quilt and scarves went over gangbusters, and I brought yarn for my Sister-in-Law to pick from for her scarf (and perhaps gloves and/or a hat). She liked the royal blue handpainted originals, which should look great in a lace pattern. I’ve been experimenting with both feather and fan and horseshoe lace.

Christmas brought me tons of CDs and books, including several new knitting books. I was stunned trying to pick a new pattern to work on. So I picked up my ruana and worked away at using up left over yarn. I watched the LoTR trilogy over the course of the long weekend, and by the time we took the dog to the park yesterday, trees were looking sort of different.
